Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) (the process of making a site "search engine-friendly"), is the most important aspect of your website online marketing strategy. The competition is high due to the obvious goal of getting to the first page in Google, with a chosen search term. When applying SEO techniques to a website, there are a number of factors that play an important part in the results. Here we will explain what they are:

Page Names

This refers to the URL of a particular page, for example, http://www.proudlypresents.co.uk/search-engine-optimisation-services/search-engine-optimisation-services-kent.php, Making the page URL a little more descriptive than 'home.html' will have a positive effect on your search engine rankings. By adding a few more descriptive words you can help ensure the search terms are indexed in major search engines such as Google.

Page Titles

When naming a page within your website, be descriptive. Search engines are looking for your search terms. For example, as we target 'Web Design Kent', we apply it to the page title of our homepage, 'Web Design Kent | Proudly Presents. That way the search engines will pick up both our business name and the search term we are targeting, thus ensuring that the page title is contributing to the overall search rankings.

Page Heading Hierarchy

The higher the page heading the more it contributes to your search rankings. Heading 1 (H1) ranks first then H2 and so on. You need to try and use your keywords as much as possible without overdoing it, as using them too much may have a negative effect within search engines.

Website Updates

Content is King!

Along with effective search engine optimisation, the most integral part of your website is text based content. The content throughout your website needs to be kept up to date. Leaving your website content dormant is like giving your clients an outdated brochure.

Your content should include keywords and search terms as much as possible. Once again, ensure that you don't over do it as the search engines will mark you down for spamming. There is a fine line between having a fully optimised website and that with too many references to your keywords.

Web Standards

World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)

The W3C is an international community that helps to develop the standards for web design.

W3C's primary activity is to developing protocols and guidelines that ensure long-term growth for the Web. W3C's standards define key parts of what makes the World Wide Web work. Learn more about W3C's mission.

The rules stated by W3C should be followed as much as possible for every website created. This will help with SEO as old standards, such as building websites with tables, are now outdated. All websites should now be built using the latest coding techniques such as CSS and XHTML.
